Don't open unknown emails
Email transmission of viruses, spam,
thishing, adware, etc are now very common. Email is one of the
easiest methods to transmit and spread these problems. You
should never open email attachments from any address that is
unknown to you. You should also never divulge any personal
details, logins, passwords, banking, etc through an email
request.
Don't unsubcribe from spam emails
Email transmission of spam is
the same as receiving postal junk mail. Most spam emails are
sent to the internet in bulk by marketing websites. This works
on the same principle as cold calling to telephone lines. You
should just delete these emails, DO NOT unsubscribe because once
you unsubscribe the senders now know that your email address in
valid and will then pass it on to other websites that produce
this type of email. The likelihood is that you will start to
receive hundreds more spam emails after unsubscribing.
Do not click on free stuff / internet speed up / PC speed up
Often websites will contain adverts to entice you into clicking
on an advert to download their software by offering free
services, programs, connection speed up, etc. You can also
receive emails offering the same things. The likelihood is that
you will download and install programs that could seriously harm
your computer without even knowing it!
Don't ever give out your Internet logon details/banking details
Transmission of emails requesting login / logon information and
passwords are now a big problem and all secure websites, eg
banking, ebay, paypal, etc recognise that this is happening and will
never ask for these details and you should never give them out
to anyone. The website will always be able to fix any problem
you have with out requiring this information.
Setup 2nd email address
It is a good idea to setup an additional
email address or an alias email address to use for website
subscriptions and sign ups. Why? Because if you start to receive
unwanted, spam emails you can easily remove / delete the email
address and create a new one to use.
Always use a firewall if using the internet
You should always use a firewall whether it is hardware
or software to protect your computer against attack from hackers
or viruses. A firewall is like a bouncer for your computer it
can block anyone from
accessing your computer. See jargon buster for a description of
firewalls.
